MICRO-CURRENT BODY SCULPTING
Micro-current technology uses tiny currents of electricity to help hydrate skin, reduce wrinkles and firm and sculpt our wobbly bits by triggering chemical reactions in the body. It’s applications are many, from fat reduction, cellulite and stretch mark treatment to breast enhancement and face lifting.
How does it work? Tiny electrical impulses are directed at cells that are not functioning properly. The charge stimulates the cells to repair and rejuvenate naturally. As a result, waste products are released and the production of natural collagen and elastin is enhanced. Consultants read specific energy levels and measure the effectiveness of the system, tailoring the painless current to your body.
What does it cost? Starting at £50 for a single facial treatment, costs depend on the area of the body you are sculpting,
the technology being used and the length of course chosen. You are likely to need between 2-3 sessions a week to gain maximum effect.

CHEMICAL PEELS
Facials, skincare routines and a healthy diet can all work wonders for the skin. But if years of neglect and stress has speeded up the ageing process faster than you might wish, it takes more than a good night cream to achieve the skin you really want – enter stage left, the chemical peel.
How does it work? Light peels mainly use alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid. Found in plants and foods such as citrus fruits, sugar cane and sour milk, they work by breaking the intracellular bonds, decreasing the ‘glue’ that holds the deadskin cells on the skin surface. It stimulates the production of collagen and the growth of better quality skin.
Medium peels mainly use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and can improve conditions such as sun-damaged skin, irregular pigmentation, pre-cancerous skin lesions and light wrinkles. The basic principle is the deeper the peel the better the results but the longer the recovery period – the effect being similar to sunburn. With a glycolic peel, a warm, mild prickling sensation is experienced. TCA peel is more intense, although the solution is left on the skin for only a few minutes before cooling with cold compresses.
What does it cost? The cost varies depending on the type of peel offered. Prices range from £70-£500. Optimum results require 4-6 treatments over a 2-3 week period.
INTENSE PULSED LIGHT TREATMENTS (IPL)
IPL therapy is a fast, relatively painless and effective way of removing unwanted hair on the face, arms, legs, torso and bikini-line– it will also sort out hubby’s back and chest hair if desired. IPL photo rejuvenation improves the skin’s structure whilst stimulating the renewal of collagen for a more youthful and vibrant complexion. It also targets pigmentation and age spots for a more evenly toned and brighter skin.
How does it work? The visible light source used in this procedure is attacyed to melanin which is found in the hair. because darker hair has more melanin, the more effective the treatment. During a typical treatment gel may be applied to the skin, an applicator wand or lamp is then used to transfer light energy which is absorbed into the hair causing a heat reaction to destroy the follicle.
What does it cost? Prices can range from £30 for a single treatment on a small area (such as the upper lip) to £300 for both legs. For best results, a course of up to 6 treatments may be advised.

DERMAL FILLERS
Whether filling out lips, smoothing wrinkles, reshaping the nose tip or chin or plumping out hollow cheeks, the new brands of dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Perlaneare an alternative to, or can be used alongside Botox. Lasting for between 6 months and up to a year, they also claim not to affect facial expression or movement.
How does it work? Fillers are often based on hyaluronic acid (which occurs naturally in the body and helps hydrate and add volume to our skin) or collagen. There is a minimal risk of allergic reactions, although a skin test is recommended. The filler is injected into the skin and gently massaged into shape. After an initial consultation, a treatment will take up to an hour and can be performed with or without integrated pain relief depending on the area treated and each patient’s sensitivity.
What does it cost? Prices vary anywhere from £150-£750 depending upon the type of filler and number of injections.
CHOOSING A TREATMENT?
Whether it’s surgery or a spray tan, your doctor or clinician needs to know your medical history! A specialist will be able to advise you on alternatives if necessary. If you’re having specialised treatments, it’s vital that the individual you choose has the correct qualifications, experience and insurance; so research this thoroughly before having the treatment. Only a trained cosmetic surgeon, doctor, dentist or nurse is legally allowed to inject Botox for example.

From liposculpture to IPL, Mwaah investigates the non-invasive procedures and innovative new treatments that are taking our salon by storm.
