I'm absolutely passionate about hair,
she smiles with a shake of her mane as if to emphasise the word passionate. This lady really means it. Ann has a thorough understanding of hair from a scientific and biological level through running a successful hair salon in Elsenham to styling celebrities on TV and film sets, wig making and helping those with hair loss. That’s the broad-minded bit.
I was always entrepreneurial,
explains Ann. As a child I would make gnomes and sell them. There was hardly a house in our road that didn't have one standing outside their front door,
she laughs. When she was old enough, Ann took up a hairdressing apprenticeship and so her career in hair began. Last year she celebrated 25 years of her very own Elsenham salon, Options, being in business. The Radisson played host to a suitably glamorous evening where 200 of her colleagues and customers enjoyed dinner, dancing and awards.
But never one to sit back on her laurels, Ann now has a new agenda in mind. I spent 10 years working with the company Racoon International specialising in human hair extensions. During that time I would travel the world training on how to use them and trouble shooting,
she explains. I've saved some top London salons from disaster.
Her extension and wig expertise has had her in demand for TV and film work and has featured in movies such as Clash of the Titans, The Inbetweeners and Madonna’s latest film W.E.
When Racoon underwent a buy-out, Ann decided it was time to do something in the area of hair volumising herself and in true expansive style, she now has a ‘hair restoration’ clinic above her Elsenham salon. The clinic is one of just 5 in the UK that offers a range of extraordinary hair loss solutions. There’s the new state of the art Folli-Cure Therapy System which combines laser treatment and specialist DNA hair products.
The system has proven to stop further hair loss and encourage new hair growth. My clients undergo a thorough consultation before proceeding,
says Ann. I won't start treatment unless the scalp analysis results show hair follicles that are likely to respond. This is achieved by using a microscope to look at scalp and hair to decide on the correct ongoing treatment.
Ann also offers hair extensions, volumisers and wigs, fitted by Ann or her specialist colleagues. Volumisers consist of hair attached to a small silicone base about 10cm in diameter which moulds itself to the head and is attached to existing natural hair, again by a specialist. Ann also works with hair fibres which are organic electrostatically ‘magnetised’ that bind to your hair to instantly build density. There have been tears shed when I have worked with these on some ladies,
admits Ann. They cannot believe that such a small hair piece can make such a huge difference. Ladies who suffer with alopecia; hair thinning or are undergoing chemotherapy can feel so unfeminine. These methods help restore their confidence.
Her postiche work, or wig making, also comes into its own. People forget that wigs can be cut and styled just like your own hair. They don't have to have that un-natural look about them,
she insists.
Faithful to her longstanding clients, one of Ann's most longstanding has this to say, You make me look and feel like the person I am inside.
Ann Fegan is one Leo who should be very proud of herself.
